About dPMR

dPMR–a simple and cost effective digital PMR Technology.

It was introduced in 2007 and is an ETSI compliant open FDMA digital protocol. The concept was to offer the market a logical migration solution from analogue to digital radio communications designed around the idea of employing proven technology, compatibility with existing analogue equipment, simplicity and low cost.

dPMR is a 6.25 kHz FDMA(Frequency-division multiple access ) based digital radio protocol described in the ETSI technical standards TS 102 490 and TS 102 658. The TS 102 490 standard defines dPMR 446 license-free radio and the TS 102 658 defines Mode 1 peer-to-peer mode, Mode 2 repeater mode and Mode 3 digital trunking. It is specifically targeting highly functional solutions by using lower cost and less complex technology.

dPMR Markets & Applications

Business and industry users have a basic need for flexible, efficient and cost effective communications systems and this was the fundamental reason for the development of the dPMR standard by ETSI, whose members did not consider that current digital radio standards really addressed the issue of low-cost.

We could spend a long time discussing the relative merits of FDMA, TDMA and CDMA technologies for this market but as far as most end users are concerned, it doesn’t make any difference. Provided the application software does exactly what the user requires, it does not matter whether the carrier is WiFi, WiMax or whatever.

The emphasis is on a fully functional radio system that can seamlessly integrate with IP networks and offer customisable application software which will have tailored solutions to business communication needs up and running in minimal time. Combined with the true low-cost approach that is the core of the dPMR protocol, the overall result is the optimum solution for users and network operators alike. Of course not all business and industry users have the same needs. For this reason dPMR has been sub-divided into 4 separate functional modes .

dPMR Mode 3

This is the dPMR solution for either very large B+I users or government services where wide area multisite, multichannel trunked repeaters can offer up to national coverage if required. dPMR radio equipment can be seamlessly integrated into existing IT networks with both text messaging and voice calls using the voice and data functionality of dPMR. Solutions already exist for PC based remote control of dPMR base stations to give completely configurable dispatcher functionality.  Mode 3 also offers users the possibility to operate efficiently in ‘direct mode’ separately from the network or beyond the coverage area of the network for special purposes such as on-scene activities.

Example – Highway Administration

Having an effective wider coverage than analogue radio with networking capabilities, dPMR does not limit the area where you want to, or can, cover. It offers reliable communication for one section of a roadway, or along an entire route.

Public Safety

dPMR is an effective alternative both in terms of communication coverage, system setup and cost compared to Tetra. It is a viable solution irrelevant of the economic times.

Government

The wide-area coverage potential of dPMR may suit governmental agencies that need to be in contact with their own or other agencies wherever they may be located.

Transportation

With the flexibility to call individuals, groups or all radios, dPMR allows you to communicate with desired working vehicles effectively and efficiently. Fleet management applications will also improve efficiency and versatility of the systems.

dPMR Mode 2

This is the dPMR solution for normal B+I users or local government services where a normal repeater coverage area is adequate. Where needed, Mode 2 can also provide wide area coverage using its special co-channel multirepeater functionality. dPMR radio equipment can be seamlessly integrated into existing IT networks with both text messaging and voice calls using the voice and data functionality . Solutions already exist for PC based remote control of dPMR base stations to give completely configurable dispatcher functionality. What always remains is the advantage for dPMR that a single repeater failure results in the loss of one voice channel not two or more. dPMR Mode 2 also offers users the possibility to operate efficiently in ‘direct mode’ separately from the network or beyond the coverage area of the network for special purposes such as on-scene activities.

Example – Hospitality

Whether a serene resort or the excitement of a casino, a dPMR system will offer management security and robust communications to run a tight ship.

Security

Secure communications allow incident response to be fast and effective. Critical when the unthinkable happens. Utilities Whether a security tool, a general communication tool, or a data tool, dPMR offers utility operators a reliable tool for all communication needs.

dPMR Mode 1

There are many commercial users such as building sites, shops, hotels, sports centres etc where the use of repeaters is not required. dPMR Mode 1 offers the optimum radio functionality for such local area coverage. Base station (non repeater type) radios could still be interconnected to IT networks via IP and exploit both text messaging and voice calls using the voice and data functionality .

Example – Campuses

dPMR offers safety and security to your students and staff with minimum cost and easy operation.
