Noise is a nuisance for any walkie-talkie user. Not only does it increase fatigue, it also reduces the quality of communication. Therefore, it must be fixed, which is where squelch comes in. It is one of the ways to filter background noise.
The purpose of adjusting the squelch is to reduce, suppress or eliminate useless noise so that it will not be transmitted through the speaker, but the call signal (even if it is a weak signal in a loud noise situation) is transmitted.
Squelch
The squelch circuit in the walkie-talkie suppresses background noise and interference when there is no signal. It mutes the speaker when no transmission is detected and only unmutes it when it detects a signal frequency above the squelch level.
This acts as a noise gate for the intercom speaker. The gate blocks out noise and only opens when there is a valid voice signal.
Squelch Level
The strength of the noise in the received signal corresponds to the strength of the signal. The stronger the signal, the weaker the noise.
Divide the maximum noise and the minimum noise into several levels, and each level is called a level. The number of levels it is divided into is called the squelch level.
The principle of setting the level is based on the user’s communication environment and communication requirements.
When the user requires a longer communication distance, the received signal will become weaker, which requires a higher receiving sensitivity and a smaller squelch level.
When the user’s communication distance is closer and the received signal is stronger, the receiving sensitivity can be lowered, the squelch level should be higher, and the noise will be smaller.
The importance of squelch in walkie-talkie communication
Blocks background noise and distractions
Filtering out background noise and interference can significantly reduce communication quality. Additionally, users do not experience listening fatigue because they no longer have difficulty discerning meaningful transmissions.
Enhance audio clarity
Filtering out background noise and interference ensures you only receive a clear signal. Therefore, it makes it easier for you to understand and respond to meaningful transmissions.
Extend battery life
It reduces the active time of the speaker, thereby saving battery life. This is most beneficial for people who use the radio all day without being able to charge it.
