How to choose the best marine radio
Marine radios are very important for boat. With so many walkie-talkie brands and models on the market, you have a lot to choose from, but you also have some questions. For example, do I need a fixed mount radio or a handheld radio? Are marine radios waterproof? Do I need a VHF marine radio license? This blog will help you how to choose the best marine radios.
What are the different types of marine radios?
There are two main types of marine radios: fixed mount and handheld.
1.Fixed-mount radio
This type of radio is permanently installed on your boat and connected to an external antenna. It derives its power from the boat’s battery, so your operating time is practically unlimited. All fixed-mount radios are limited to 25 watts of transmitting power bay law. Such as retevis RM20. It is a 25W Fixed Mount Marine Radio, with IP67, NOAA, GPS and high volume.
2.Handheld marine radio
Most handheld radios have all the same features as the fixed mount radios. The main difference between the two (besides being portable) is transmitting power. Because these radios are battery-powered, the transmitting power is usually limited to 3-6 watts. Such as retevis RM01. It is a 3W handheld marine radio, 88CH, with IP67, NOAA.
3.Are marine radios waterproof?
All Retevis marine radios are IP67 waterproof, which have been tested to work for at least 30 minutes while under 15cm to 1m of water. While it’s better to install a fixed mount marine radio in the boat, these radios will still work even when underwater. Our handheld marine radios also have floating alarm function, if your walkie-talkies accidentally fall into the water, this feature can help you find them quickly.
4.Do I need a VHF marine radio license?
According to the FCC, you do not need a VHF marine radio license to use a radio on a recreational or pleasure craft operating in the United States. If your radio has DSC capability, you must obtain a maritime mobile service identity (MMSI) number and program it into your radio before you transmit using this service. DSC operates like a “mayday” button, automatically broadcasting a distress call with your location (if you’re using GPS) to nearby vessels.
