If you love sea sports and enjoy adventure, communication is the key to safe and successful sailing. It is important to choose a reliable marine radio when making preparations. Retevis has a number of excellent Marine radios, including the critically acclaimed RM01, so what are the real reviews from users?
I’ve taken this Retevis RM01 out sailing on Galveston Bay for several days, and I’m highly satisfied with its performance. The built-in speaker produces loud and clear audio, easily heard over wind and waves. Others have complimented me on the loud and clear transmission audio, even in 20 knot winds, which I verified through the boat’s onboard VHF radio. I can communicate with boats located across the bay, around 3 or 4 miles away, which meets my expectations for a 3W radio. So, as a basic radio, it passes the essential test of being able to communicate with nearby boats.
The RM01 offers 3 scan modes. Dual scan monitors the current channel and 16, while tri scan adds a user-specified call channel like ch9. Additionally, there’s a scan mode that rotates through all tagged channels, and I can tag/untag as many channels as I want. This feature is handy for scanning 16 and the various channels used in the busy Houston Ship Channel that runs through the bay. I can also tag the weather channel, pause there, and continue scanning even while WX is transmitting. Overall, I find this scan feature very useful.
Another positive aspect is the use of NiMh AAA batteries instead of a liion block battery. My solution is to carry an extra set of Alkaline AAA batteries to swap out if needed. However, the batteries have lasted all day (5-6 hours) with a bar of battery still showing.
I’m also impressed with the features included in this affordable radio. It provides a useful user manual that describes all the display icons and menu options in an easy-to-understand format within just 6 pages.
Lastly, the radio’s small and lightweight design allows me to carry it in a shirt pocket with barely any notice. It will be perfect for the dinghy or paddleboard, enabling me to stay in touch even off the boat.
In conclusion, the user reviews of marine radios speak volumes about their importance and reliability on the water. The users have praised their clear audio, long-lasting batteries, and impressive range that keeps them connected even in challenging conditions.
