What is FRS?

The Family Radio Service (FRS) is a private, two-way, short-distance voice and data communications service for facilitating family and group activities.

The FRS radio utilizes frequencies channels between 462 and 467 megahertz in the ultra high frequency (UHF) band.  This band is the license-free band in United States.

It has 22 channels, frequencies range  between 462mhz to 467 mhz. You can choose the privacy code for each channel. We called CTCSS/DCS.

Retevis has lots of FRS license-free radios, such as the model RT22, RT24, RT17, RT16 and so on.

What’s the different between FRS and GMRS?

1, FRS is the license-free radio, you can use the radio out of box, no need license. But GMRS need a license.

2, GMRS can used for base station. but FRS can’t.

3, FRS with the limited power less than 2w. But some frequencies of GMRS channels can up to 50w.

  1. What settings do I need to set specifically to get a retivs mobile to work on GMRS repeaters. Have tried multiple settings with no success yet, Thx.

    1. hi, if you want to set your mobile radio to connect with the GMRS repeater, you need to set the frequency opposite with the GMRS repeater.

  2. We use the RT27 radios for car-to-car communications and for setting up our RV. The range of the RT27 is adequate for our hiking needs. In addition, I find Retevis RT97 is so expensive, I can not afford to buy it
