According to my last blog, I introduced the GMRS version RA85, and now, let’s talk about the RA685, a ham radio for EU countries and England.
It looks the same as RA85, so we can check the other sides of the radio.
And what are the differences between RA85 and RA685?
First, the frequency is different, RA85 is GMRS radio, so the frequency is fixed, the users cannot change the frequency. But TA685 is ham radio, the frequency is VHF+UHF, from 144-146MHz, and 430-440MHz. And you can only receive the date if you are in another frequency range.
Secondly, RA85 has a fixed antenna, the users cannot remove or change the antenna, but the users can remove and change the antenna by themselves on RA685.
The next difference is, the users can only apply for the license in the local ham club for the GMRS radios, it is not the same as the ham license, so you can only pay for the fees of GMRS frequency. But the ham radio is more complicated, you need to consult with the local ham club about the relevant knowledge of the license to apply.
Finally, the functions and features are different.
- Frequency band: UHF+VHF
- Channel number: 128 channels can be saved
- N/W band: 25/12.5kHz
- Dual-band, dual display, dual standby
- 2 powers can be chosen
- CTCSS/DCS, DTMF signaling
- Tail tone elimination
- VOX
- Emergency alarm, ANI identification
- 8 step frequency selection: 2.5k, 5.0k, 6.25k,10.0k,12.5k, 20.0k, 25.0k, 50.0k
- Battery saving function
- SOS emergency alert
- FM radio
To consider the RA85, the RA685 has more choices, you can use it in many scenarios like ham activities, business use, outdoor activities, or even you can talk to your friends who live far away from you within 4.5 miles.

So can the antenna be removed and replaced or not. It’s not very good I can confirm.
Secondly, RA85 has a fixed antenna, the users cannot remove or change the antenna, but the users can remove and change the antenna by themselves.
